01 / About Albany

New York’s Capital City

Albany has served as the capital of New York State since 1797 and is one of the oldest continuously chartered cities in the United States, with roots stretching back to the early Dutch colonial settlement of Fort Nassau in 1614. Situated on the west bank of the Hudson River approximately 150 miles north of New York City, Albany has been the epicenter of New York State government for more than two centuries.

The city’s political landscape is anchored by the Empire State Plaza, a monumental government complex conceived by Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller in the 1960s. The Plaza houses the State Capitol, the Legislative Office Building (LOB), multiple agency buildings, the New York State Museum, The Egg performing arts center, and the Corning Tower, whose 42nd-floor observation deck offers panoramic views of the Capital Region.

For government relations professionals, Albany represents a concentrated center of political power. The State Senate (63 members), the State Assembly (150 members), the Governor’s office, and dozens of state agencies all operate within a walkable radius, making the city uniquely accessible for advocacy work.
